Mulled Wine

A traditional recipe from Mrs. Beeton’s Book of Household Management calls for the following ingredients:
To every pint (500 ml) of wine allow 1 large cupful of water, sugar and spice to taste.
Here is my version:


500 ml red wine
1 C water
1/4 C sugar
1 cinnamon stick
6 cloves
2 cinnamon sticks for garnish
2 orange slices for garnish


Bring water, 1 stick of cinnamon and cloves to a boil.
Simmer uncovered for 20 min, stirring occasionally.
Remove cloves and cinnamon stick.
Add sugar, dissolve, then add wine.
Heat until just hot.
Pour into 2 glasses and garnish with cinnamon and orange slices.

Match made in Heaven:

Sweets and a fireplace.
